FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions:
Answers:
• Are
these beautiful plants expensive?
No, to the contrary. Many choice varieties are
available for $3 to $5 each. Since they can persist for ten or more years,
they are a bargain.
• I would like to learn
more about these iris flowers. Could you give me some references?
We refer you to the references
and culture tips.
You also may go to a search engine such as Google on the internet and
reference ‘Siberian iris’ and you will probably get as much
as you need.
• Will
I have to spray them?
Siberian irises are relatively free of insects and diseases. There may
be occasional trouble with the iris borer, but usually not enough to need
to spray for.
• We
are in the midst of a three year drought. Will I need to irrigate them?
Our iris flowers benefit from adequate moisture the
first year. Once well established, they are quite drought tolerant. Use
of organic mulch helps a lot to maintain a steady moisture level in the
soil, to cool the soil and to prevent weeds.
• What
are some good varieties to start with?
A good list of five to start with would be (1) Caesars
Brother – Always a good choice and an all-time favorite. (2) Ego
– a lighter shade and nice (3) Ruffled Velvet – a good choice
in the dark purple color range (4) Shaker’s Prayer – a different
and beautiful form (5) Steve Varner – a shorter one in the lighter
shade of color. This list is sure to be disputed, and there are many more
to choose from, but these are reliable, beautiful and moderately priced
iris flowers.
